Old Stuff (e.g. sitting and breathing)
The past month, I’ve gotten back into the habit of reading daily. I started by going to Strand and buying two new books, Homage to Catalonia, by George Orwell, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, by Truman Capote. The first seemed appropriate given current events in Spain, and my limited knowledge of the Spanish Civil War, and the second has always been a favorite of mine. I lost my prior copy.
After finishing those two, I stopped by Barnes & Noble in Union Square and picked-up The Elements of Style, made famous by E.B. White, and On Writing: A Memoir of a Craft, by Stephen King – both books focus on how to write well. So much of my writing the past few years has been via email, Gchat, text message and Slack, it’s lost its form, so I thought a return to the basics would be worthwhile. I'd also read On Writing in college, and liked it, so a new copy was in order.
I’m happy to see Wilson’s most recent post is on Meditation. Explaining, “I am not using any technology, just old fashioned sitting and breathing,” Wilson seems to be going back to the basics too, trying to reset his routine a bit.
With so much new happening all the time, from two week release cycles to constantly updating iOS apps, it’s nice to revisit the old from time to time.
